When you visit a website in Chrome, the browser stops responding and the message "Waiting for extension AdBlock..." appears in the lower left corner of the Chrome window. Often, the Chrome Task Manager shows the AdBlock process using 100% CPU.
Why is it happening?
We thought at first this behavior was caused by a bug in AdBlock. Now we believe a recent Chrome update broke something in our software that had been working. This is a risk whenever software relies on other software to keep working the way it always has.
Will it be fixed?
UPDATE December 4, 2018: AdBlock for Chrome 3.35.0 includes a fix for this issue. AdBlock will be updated automatically if AdBlock is enabled in Chrome and Chrome is open.
Is there anything I need to do?
The only things you need to do are to run Chrome and, if you disabled AdBlock on chrome://extensions, re-enable it. Chrome checks for extension updates every few hours.
You can also force an update like this:
- Open chrome://extensions and make sure AdBlock is enabled.
- Click Developer mode in the upper right corner to turn on additional tools for Chrome developers.
- Click Update.
I have the December update and this is still happening!

Next, we'd like you to check for any errors associated with AdBlock or Chrome. If either Chrome or AdBlock is unresponsive, you won't be able to do this. That's all right.
Check for errors associated with AdBlock:
- Open a new tab and visit chrome://extensions to open Chrome's extensions page.
- Select Developer mode in the upper right corner of the page. This makes a few more options appear.
- Find AdBlock in the list and click the background page link to open a "developer mode" window for AdBlock.
- Click the Console tab at the top of the window.
- Reload the page where the problem is happening. (You might need to drag the developer window out of the way.)
- If there are any error messages in the console window (usually in red text), paste them into your ticket.
Check for errors associated with Chrome:
- Right-click the page and select Inspect. The Chrome Developer Tools panel opens beside or below the page.
- Click the Console tab at the top of the new window.
- Reload the page.
