This past Wednesday, the ad-blocking community woke up to find their favorite sites had broken overnight. With their ad blockers running, images didn't load and pages looked wrong. Affected sites included Facebook, Netflix, and many, many others.


The trouble was caused by an overzealous filter rule in Wednesday's update to EasyList. Basically, the filter blocked images, page styling, and JavaScript code on any page with an "n" in its address. EasyList is the filter list that blocks ads on English-language websites. It's the engine that powers all ad blockers, including ours. When an error like this one slips in, it can affect thousands of websites and millions of users around the world.


The list authors (who are not us) fixed the broken filter and released a correction within 40 minutes of receiving the first reports. If it hasn't already, AdBlock will receive the corrected filter list automatically over the next day or so as long as your browser is open. 


You can also force a manual filter list refresh like this:


AdBlock for Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari (desktop extensions)

  1. Click the AdBlock icon in the browser toolbar and select Options.
  2. On the FILTER LISTS tab, click update now.
  3. Wait for the filter lists to update, and then refresh any web pages you have open.


AdBlock for Safari (Mac app)

  1. Click the AdBlock icon in the MacOS menu bar and select Update Filter Lists.
  2. Wait for the filter lists to update, and then refresh any web pages you have open.


AdBlock for Mobile (iPhone and iPad app)

  1. Open the AdBlock app and tap Update Filter Lists.
  2. Wait for the filter lists to update, and then refresh any web pages you have open.


AdBlock for Samsung Internet (Android app)

  1. Open the AdBlock app and tap Update subscriptions.
  2. Wait for the filter lists to update, and then refresh any web pages you have open.


AdBlock for Firefox (Android app)

  1. Open the Firefox menu, tap AdBlock, and then tap Options.
  2. Tap the "hamburger menu" in the upper right corner of the page, and then tap FILTER LISTS.
  3. Tap update now.
  4. Wait for the filter lists to update, and then refresh any web pages you have open.
