Update February 17, 2017:

TRONC changed its ad code just yesterday, the same day we released an update that blocked their ads. As of now, neither AdBlock 3.8.7 nor the custom filters below are able to block the ads on TRONC news sites. Watch this space for updates!

Update February 14, 2017:

We're working on an update to AdBlock for Chrome that will block the ads on these sites without the need for custom filters. AdBlock already blocks these ads in Microsoft Edge, Safari, and Firefox.

In the meantime, please use the following custom filters to block the ads.

According to this post on the EasyList forum, confirmed by us, the following filters block the ads on TRONC sites such as Chicagotribune.com, Ottawacitizen.com, Orlandosentinel.com, Sandiegouniontribune.com, Sun-sentinel.com, Mcall.com, Capitalgazette.com, Baltimoresun.com, Carrollcountytimes.com, and Courant.com.

  1. Click the AdBlock button and select Options, then click the CUSTOMIZE tab.
  2. Click Edit to open the custom filters box.
  3. Paste the filters below exactly as given.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Reload the page you're trying to view.

Note: In Safari and Opera, replace "$generichide" below with "$elemhide" since AdBlock in these browsers doesn't use the $generichide element.

Copy these filters:

Note: Replace "chicagotribune.com" with the domain of the site where you're seeing the ads.

@@||chicagotribune.com^$generichide
@@||www.example.com^*=|
@@|https:*.js$script,domain=chicagotribune.com
